APL head-to-head record
There is no record here yet, and there cannot be one: neither club has played a match. The ACB had not published the fixture list, so there is no date, no ground and no score to report — only the two squads from the 3 November draft in Dubai, set side by side below. The first time they meet, the result will be the first entry in this record. The 2018 meetings between the cities do not count toward it: the Legends and the Panthers were different clubs, and what they did stays with them.
The 2018 meetings: same cities, different clubs
The cities met twice in the 2018 league stage, and the honours were shared. On 10 October the Panthers made 204 for 4 and bowled the Legends out for 167 in 19 overs, winning by 37 runs — one of only two league defeats Balkh suffered all season. Three days later the reply was emphatic: Balkh made 195 for 4 and bowled Paktia out for 106 in 15.2 overs, winning by 89 runs. The 16-year-old Rahmanullah Gurbaz, in the Panthers' side as a specialist batter, made 33 off 22 balls with four sixes — his best innings of the tournament — in a reply that folded around him.
The table behind those two games shows why both sides mattered. Balkh topped the league with six wins from eight, 12 points and a net run rate of +0.782; Paktia finished second with five wins, the only other side with a winning record, on the back of Mohammad Shahzad's 344 runs and Isuru Udana's 17 wickets. The two never met again: in the semi-finals Balkh bowled Nangarhar out for 64, while Paktia were bowled out for 102 by Kabul Zwanan and lost by 90 runs. Two days later Balkh chased Kabul's 132 for 9 with 138 for 6 in 18.1 overs to take the title — Qais Ahmad took 5 for 18 and was player of the match, Chris Gayle made 56 off 34, and Rashid Khan was named player of the series.
The thread from those two games to this fixture runs through the man who now captains Paktia. Gurbaz was 16 when he was named in the Panthers' squad, played five matches as a specialist batter while Shahzad kept wicket, and made 65 runs for the tournament — more than half of them in that 33 against Balkh. Eight years on he returns as Paktia's captain, the role he took on 3 November when the ACB swapped him with Rahmat Shah. And the man who finished the 2018 story is back in Balkh colours: Qais Ahmad, who took 5 for 18 in the final, was picked by Balkh Zwanan in the Supplementary round.
Where the squads differ
On paper the two squads are twins: 19 players each, a Platinum pick, two Diamond picks, five Gold picks, five Silver picks, three Emerging picks and two Supplementary picks. The difference is where the draft money went. Balkh spent its Platinum round on Moeen Ali, the second pick of the whole draft at $100,000, and its Diamond round on AM Ghazanfar and Luke Wood; Paktia picked last in Platinum and took Wanindu Hasaranga at the same $100,000, and spent Diamond on Noor Ahmad and Nahid Rana. Both sides then built the same way, and both finished with a squad that leans on its Afghan core.
The one structural difference is overseas: Paktia carry six, Balkh five. Paktia's list is Hasaranga, Nahid Rana, Colin Munro, David Wiese, Gerhard Erasmus and Olly Stone; Balkh's is Moeen Ali, Luke Wood, Muhammad Waseem, Thomas Moores and Colin Ackermann. And the spin tells its own story — Paktia hold two frontline wrist-spinners in one squad, Hasaranga and Noor Ahmad, while Balkh's answer is Ghazanfar, the youngest ODI debutant in history at 16 years and 236 days, with 6 for 26 against Bangladesh to his name. Paktia's Gold round also brought the most experienced overseas batting on either side: Munro and Wiese, against Balkh's Sediqullah Atal and Waseem.
Key battles to watch
The captains carry the history of this fixture between them. Ibrahim Zadran is the national opener, steady at the top of the order; Gurbaz is the opposite — the 2024 T20 World Cup's leading run-scorer with 281 runs, and the holder of nine ODI centuries, the most by an Afghan. Gurbaz has already made his best APL innings against this city: that 33 off 22 in the 2018 meeting, four sixes in a side that made 106. The first time the two openers walk out for the toss as captains, the tone of the match will be set by which of them bats longer.
The overseas duel is leg-spin against leg-spin: Hasaranga, Paktia's Platinum pick and the leading wicket-taker at two T20 World Cups, against Ghazanfar, Balkh's Diamond pick and the youngest ODI debutant in history. Hasaranga is making his APL debut in 2026 — he spent August 2018 in Dambulla's squad in Sri Lanka's domestic T20 league — and the first time he bowls to a Balkh middle order that includes Moeen Ali, the second Platinum pick of the draft, will be the contest the crowd watches.
And waiting in the middle overs is Qais Ahmad, whose leg-spin took 5 for 18 in the 2018 final — the one bowler on either side who has already won a big APL match at Sharjah. He was a Balkh Legend in 2018, and his return in Balkh colours is the thread that ties this fixture to the only APL title ever won.
Coaches and mentors
The dugouts are as strong as the squads. Balkh's head coach is Mickey Arthur, with Tillakaratne Dilshan as mentor; Paktia's is Azhar Mahmood, with Waqar Younis as mentor. Both groups were settled at the leaders' draft on 25 October, the day the captains were named, and the full leadership groups are in the mentors, coaches and captains announcement of 2 November. One detail in that announcement is already out of date: it still lists Rahmanullah Gurbaz as Nangarhar's captain, a line the 3 November swap — Gurbaz to Paktia, Rahmat Shah to Nangarhar — made stale. The coaches and mentors are not affected.
When do they play each other?
Not yet — the fixture list had not been published, so the first Balkh Zwanan vs Paktia meeting has no date and no ground. What is fixed is the frame: the season opens on 27 December 2026 in the UAE, the first ball is at 5:30 PM Afghanistan time (5:00 PM Dubai time), and the league has advertised 24 matches. When the ACB publishes the fixtures, the date and the ground — and then the result — will go on this page; until then the schedule and the points table are the places to watch.
Frequently asked questions
Have Balkh Zwanan and Paktia played each other before?
No. Both clubs are new for 2026 and neither has played an APL match, so the record stands at 0–0. Their first meeting has no date yet — the fixture list had not been published — and the scorecard will be added here once they play.
What happened in the 2018 meetings between Balkh Legends and Paktia Panthers?
The cities split their two league meetings in 2018: Paktia won by 37 runs on 10 October, making 204 for 4 and bowling Balkh out for 167; Balkh won by 89 runs on 13 October, making 195 for 4 and bowling Paktia out for 106. They did not meet again — Balkh went on to win the title, Paktia lost their semi-final to Kabul. Those were different clubs, so the results do not count toward the 2026 record.
Who captains each side?
Ibrahim Zadran captains Balkh Zwanan — he is the franchise's Afghan Icon and the national opener. Rahmanullah Gurbaz captains Paktia — he is the franchise's Afghan Icon, and he took the role on 3 November 2026, when the ACB swapped him with Rahmat Shah, who now leads Nangarhar Cosmic.
Who are the Platinum picks?
Balkh took England all-rounder Moeen Ali in Platinum, the second pick of the whole draft at $100,000. Paktia picked last in Platinum and took Sri Lanka leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga at the same $100,000. Both were picked at the players' draft in Dubai on 3 November 2026, and both are making their APL debuts — neither played the first season in 2018.
When does APL 2026 start?
The season opens on 27 December 2026 in the UAE, with the first ball at 5:30 PM Afghanistan time (5:00 PM Dubai time). The official fixture list, including the first Balkh Zwanan versus Paktia meeting, had not been published yet.
