APL Fantasy Strategy: Lessons From the 2018 Season
No lock of the week. A way of thinking about a tournament that has not started, plus the one that finished in Sharjah.
Analysis
The point is not to out-IPL the IPL. The point is a season that Afghan cricketers do not have to leave the sport's own structure to find.
There is a dismissive version of this story. Five teams, one month, grounds in another country: how much can it matter? The dismissive version forgets what Afghan cricket used to be missing, which was not talent. It was a place inside their own board where that talent played against itself in front of a broadcast, with contracts, coaches and a table.
Full Membership arrived in 2017. The first APL followed a year later and then vanished. In the gap, the pathway ran through other people's leagues. That produced extraordinary bowlers and a fearless top order. It also meant a young seamer in Khost or Mazar could watch Rashid Khan more easily in an IPL telecast than in a domestic final. Shpageeza, the provincial T20, has carried a lot of that domestic weight. A franchise league is a different machine. It imports overseas players and exports a product. Done badly, it is a billboard. Done with a straight draft and a real emerging quota, it is a shop window for players who are not yet Rashid.
The 2026 design at least pretends to remember that. An Emerging category in the draft is not a press release about youth. It is pick order. Nangarhar won the right to open it. Whether they spend it on a real prospect or a comfortable local name will be visible, which is the point of publishing a draft.
The UAE hosting is the honest compromise, not a scandal to be waved through. The board has said later editions may move. Fans are allowed to want Kandahar's team in Kandahar. They are also allowed to want the first season to happen. Both wants fit in the same person.
Mirwais Ashraf, the ACB chairman, called the league a step that creates chances for players and puts Afghan cricket on a wider stage. Chairmen say that sort of sentence. This one is testable. Count Afghan debuts across the 24 matches. Count how many of them are under 23. The about page will keep that count when the matches exist. It will not predict the number.

Smaller on purpose. The interesting comparison is the draft, not the budget.
Ninety players, 18 rounds, six categories. Kandahar Warriors opened with Muhammad Amir; Nangarhar Cosmic opened Silver and Emerging.
