APL Draft Order & Captaincy Swap: Gurbaz to Paktia

Key takeaways

  • The draft is 18 rounds and 90 players.
  • Kandahar pick first in Platinum and Diamond.
  • Gurbaz captains Paktia; Rahmat Shah captains Nangarhar.

The Afghanistan Premier League decided not to draw the first picks out of a hat. It made the leadership groups play for them. The APL Huddle, held in Dubai before the 3 November player draft, put each franchise's captain, coach, ambassadors and ownership through five games. Each game was tied to a category: Platinum, Diamond, Gold, Silver, Emerging. Finish first in the game, open that category.

Kandahar Warriors won Platinum and Diamond. They call the first name of the draft, and the first name when Diamond begins. Akcel Kabul United, which is Akcel United Kabul, won Gold. Nangarhar Cosmic won Silver and Emerging. Balkh sit second on the opening Platinum round. Paktia sit second on the opening Gold round and second on the opening Emerging round. Later rounds inside each category were randomised so one huddle win did not become a month of first picks.

Two supplementary rounds follow the Emerging order. Eighteen rounds, five calls each round, ninety players. Eighteen per franchise if nobody sells a pick. That is a squad, not a playing XI. Early notes on the competition talked about four overseas players in the XI and one emerging local. The categories make that conversation concrete: Platinum is where the room goes quiet.

The same day, the board moved two captains. Rahmanullah Gurbaz leads Paktia. Rahmat Shah Zarmati leads Nangarhar. The earlier assignment had them reversed. The statement was procedural. It did not read like a row, and this article will not add a row that the statement did not contain.

Selections themselves are not listed here. A draft that takes place on the day of publication cannot be reconstructed from rumour without putting the wrong player in the wrong shirt. When the board posts the ninety names, the squads page is the place they will land. Until then the only locked players are the five captains.

One process note, because it will be copied badly. The huddle tested the leadership groups. It did not test the players who are about to be picked. A franchise can win a quiz and still call the wrong name. That is the sport.
