ACB and ITW MEA Sign 10-Edition APL Partnership
A year-long tender, a 10-edition agreement and a joint council that chooses venues. The business side of the revival.
Explainers
The 2018 season lived at one ground. The 2026 season has a country, not yet a street address.
The 2018 Afghanistan Premier League did not tour. It sat down in Sharjah and stayed there from 5 to 21 October. The final, the semi-final in which Nangarhar Leopards made 64, and the afternoon Balkh Legends made 244 for 6 were the same ground in different moods. Anyone selling you a single 'Sharjah template' for fantasy is skipping the 64.
The revived league is also not, for this first season, a tour of Afghan cities. The board has been consistent on that since the announcement: ICC-approved venues in the United Arab Emirates, with the door left open for later seasons to move. The line that matters is the second half. Hosting 2026 in the UAE is a choice about security, broadcast logistics and readiness. It is not a promise that Kabul or Kandahar never see a home game.
What is missing is the unglamorous bit. Which ground, which night, which match. Dubai International, Zayed in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah are the three ICC-standard T20 grounds people will guess, because they are the three that already carry franchise cricket in the Gulf. A guess is not a fixture. The Sharjah page is written as history. It does not claim the 2026 final.
The first ball has a time without a pair of teams. The official APL site lists 27 December 2026, 5:30 PM Afghanistan time (5:30 PM Afghanistan time). No opponent, no venue line. This site will not fill the blanks to make a match card look finished. The schedule says the same thing in plainer clothes.
Pitch talk, then, has to be humble. Use 2018 as a case study of one ground across sixteen days, not as a forecast for a ground that might be a different one. High totals happened. Collapses happened. Dew is a December question in the Gulf and it will not be identical at 5:00 PM and at 8:00 PM, if both slots are used. We do not yet know the slots.
A year-long tender, a 10-edition agreement and a joint council that chooses venues. The business side of the revival.
Five city teams, a December start in the UAE, and one finished season back in 2018. The rest is still being written.
Twenty league games, then a knockout. The 2018 version used semi-finals. The 2026 version is not a photocopy.
